Wales: Snowdonia & the Northern Coast

According to guide Peter Cooper, guests on our Wales tour often depart with an intense sense of belonging. The Welsh have a word for it: hiraeth, which means “homecoming.” It starts with an instant immersion in ancient history and mythology that extends from celebrated Dolwyddelan Castle, built in 1210 by Llewelyn the Great, to the oft-told local tales of fairies and elves that infuse the region with a sense of magic. This feeling continues in Snowdon, Wales’ highest peak and the fabled final resting place of an ogre killed by King Arthur, and in the ancient Druid burial chambers at Bryn Celli Dhu.

You’ll also find it in the remnants of Iron Age civilization at Caer y Twr and in the classic Arthurian towers of Conwy Castle. And it’s waiting in medieval Caernarfon Castle, site of Prince Charles’ investment ceremony, and the historic Ty Gwyn Hotel in the artists’ colony of Betws-y-Coed, a 16th-century coach inn now run by a colorful Welsh family, where hearty traditional breakfasts prepare you for the day ahead.
